Sunday 1 December 2013

December has arrived!

December has arrived and we are about to have 3 very busy weeks in Year One! On the build up to Christmas we will be learning about instruction writing, doubling numbers and will be continuing our theme of babies and toys, as well as finding time to practise the nativity!!

Literacy
In Literacy we are going to look at some non-fiction texts! We will be thinking about the different features of instruction writing and how we can begin to make our own instructions. We will be ordering events, sequencing instructions and thinking about time words and bossy words!

Numeracy
In Numeracy we are going to be exploring number doubles! In year one we need to be able to remember our number doubles off by heart, just like our number bonds! So we will be doing lots of different activities to find out and learn our number doubles! You could practise these at home with dominoes, a dice, number cards, or even doubling numbers up to 10 (e.g. 10+10=20) that you see on your way to school!

You can practise your doubles here too!

Bridge Doubles
Robin Hood Doubles

Topic
In topic this week we are going to be practising our computer skills. Year One showed me how brilliant they all have become on the laptops this week when they made a story book with a partner and this week will be thinking about what skills we are using when we are using the laptops. We will be playing some computer simulation games and comparing these to real life situations. We will be evaluating games and thinking about how easy they are to use!

Here are some links for you;

Dress Teddy
Paint a Picture
Jack and the Beanstalk
Water Play

Sunday 17 November 2013

A busy week ahead!

This week is National Anti-Bullying Week so we are going to be thinking all about the kind things we can do, and do do, for each other in school. We will be working hard to recognise positive behaviours  in each other and how we can reward these actions to create a super environment to learn and play in....and we will tell you how we have done this in our assembly on Friday!

Literacy
In Literacy we are going to be looking at stories with predictable and patterned language. As well as looking carefully and picking out key features in fiction books we will also have a go at writing our own text linked to our weekly theme of positive behaviours!

Numeracy
In Numeracy we will be exploring weight! We will be learning how to estimate, compare and measure weights and using measures to solve problems! You could practise at home by ordering a selection of your toys into weight order!

Friday 8 November 2013

Next Week...

Literacy
In Literacy we are continuing to learn about Poems and Rhymes and will begin the week by practising to read with rhythm and rhyme! We will be thinking about using describing words in our poem and continue to find and use rhyming words. To support your Literacy learning at home you can see if you can find some poems at home and read them with lots of rhythm! Remember there are some nursery rhymes on our Literacy page that you can sing along to!

Numeracy
At the beginning of the week we will be looking at positions and how to describe positions. Here are some games to support your learning..

Naming positions

Woodland Disco

Towards the end of the week we will be looking at the value of each digit in two digit numbers! We will be using the numicon to explore these numbers! You could practise making teen numbers at home with 10ps and 1ps!
 10p + 1p = 11p

Life Education Van!!

We had a lovely time in the Life Education Van today! We learnt all about the different food groups and how they help our body stay healthy. We met Tammy who showed us what is inside our body and how our food can help give us energy and how this travels around our body! Some people were chosen to light the different organs up with a magic wand!

Then we met Harold! Lots of people remembered Harold from last year so we were very excited about seeing him again! We had a look inside his lunchbox and had to think about what food groups he had and which were missing! We worked out he was missing fruit and suggested some fruits he could put in it to make it a healthy lunch! When it was time to leave we all said thank-you to Harold and some of us even got a kiss!

Monday 4 November 2013

Snacko!

Mr Lavis has found us a fun way to check if our snacks are healthy! Today we asked Snacko if our raisins were healthy and he said yes! We found out that there is a lot of sugar in raisins but as we only eat 25g and not 100g we decided this was ok! Check out your snacks at home using this link...

You could see if all the snacks in your lunchbox are healthy!!

Materials

From our questions today I have put some games on 'mycity' for you to explore. There is also this game from the BBC schools website where you can practise sorting materials.

Sorting Materials

Here are some videos that might answer some of our questions from today too...
How to make Welly Boots

How to make a Wooly Jumper

Welcome Back!

We have had a lovely first day back after the holidays, everyone was very enthusiastic to find out about what we will be learning this half term which is fantastic! This afternoon we started our topic with a 'speed learning' session! We were put into groups and each group then visited a different station around the hall to learn about different areas of our new topic - we only got 5 minutes at each station!

By thinking about what we already know we were able to develop our thinking and ask new questions about what we want to learn next! We had a super time! Have a look at the pictures of our speed learning session and read the captions to find out what we want to learn!

We started to think about how clothes are made. We know clothes don't grow in the ground but we aren't too sure how clothes are made or where fabric comes from! Definitely a good area to investigate!
Q: How are clothes made?
Here we are making predictions and finding out which fabrics are waterproof and which are not!
Q: Why are some clothes waterproof?
Here we are weaving using some cooling racks! It was lots of fun and we made some pretty patterns, but we wondered what weaving has to do with clothes! Another question we will be answering in our topic!
We looked at lots of books about clothes and found that there are lots of different clothes all over the world. We also had books about what clothes used to be like in the past and wondered why they are different now?
Q: What kinds of clothes do people wear around the world?
Here we had magnifying glasses to explore lots of different types of materials. The materials looked very different up close, and each one looked a little bit different. We will be exploring lots of different types of materials in our topic!
Q: What are different materials used for?

Wednesday 30 October 2013

What a windy week!

Hello Everyone! I hope you are all enjoying your half term and the weather! What a lot of wind! I hope you are getting lots of rest because it's going to be another exciting and busy term as we lead up to Christmas!

Literacy
Next week we are going to be exploring Poetry! We will  looking at lots of different poems to see if we can spot any rhyming words or any lines that are repeated! Here is a game that you can play to practising spotting rhyming words...Roy The Zebra. Over the holidays you might like to see if you can find some poems. If you find one you can bring it in and share it with the class!

Numeracy
Next week we will be looking at sequencing events and reminding ourselves about the days of the week and the months of the year. You might like to think about what you have been up to this week. You could make a holiday diary to show what you have done on each day, or you could think about all the things you do in just one day and write them down in order!

Topic
After a very successful topic on Journeys we are now going to start our next topic all about Clothes! We will be finding out about different fabrics and their properties, looking at different clothes from around the world and we will also be exploring how clothes are made! We have our very own 'Fairy Tales Fancy Dress' Shop in the classroom which I'm sure you will all be very excited about! Can you spot some things that your favourite character might wear?

Saturday 19 October 2013

Sorting data, letter writing and car making!

Numeracy
During Numeracy this week we have been busy exploring Data Handling. We have made pictograms, tally charts and tables. We had fun asking our friends what their favourite snack is, and recording our results in a tally chart. Then we used the laptops to turn our tally chart into a pictogram!

Literacy
We have had fun in Literacy this week with our story 'Something behind the Curtain'. We have written letters to the 'something' asking it to go away and live somewhere else. We then wrote a letter to the something describing a new place for it to live. Here is one of our letters...

 Topic
We made some super cars this week! We each painted a box thinking about where we would paint the windows and the sunroof! When they were dry we then attached wheels with split pins and stuck stickers on them to add detail for the indicators and the brake lights! We had lots of fun making these cars!

Sunday 13 October 2013

New tabs...

Check out our 2 new tabs at the top of our blog called 'Literacy' and 'Numeracy'. There are some games on there for you to play which links with our learning. Have fun!

Saturday 12 October 2013

Next Week...

Literacy

In Literacy we are looking at an Animated Tale called 'Something behind the curtain'. We will be exploring different emotions, settings, characters as well as making predictions about the story and writing a letter to the 'thing' behind the curtain! You could practise writing a letter at home. You could write to someone in your family or a friend at school!

Numeracy

In Numeracy we will be learning all about data handling! We will be looking at, and using, tables, lists, pictograms and tally charts to gather and display information.

You can practise using a pictogram at home on the link below. Ask a grown up to help you!

Create a pictogram

You can also practise reading pictograms on this link...

Reading Pictograms

Topic

In topic we will be making a sound story about a journey. We will be thinking of all the sounds you might hear on a journey and how we can create those sounds using instruments and our bodies. We will also be following instructions to make our very own car! We will be following our learning from last week where we made predictions about how to make a train move faster, and seeing if we can predict what will happen when we race our cars!

A very creative week!

We had a very creative week in Year One last week! In Literacy we made our own 'creatures' to go behind the door in our story 'Knock, Knock, Who's there'. We used lots of junk modelling and playdough to make our creatures so we could make them very 'descriptive'. Some people made scales by pressing straws into the playdough and some people used straws for spikes! Lots of our models were very sparkly - the classroom looked like Christmas had come early with glitter everywhere! We then described our models putting our describing words in sentences. Here are some of our creatures - can you spot yours?

In Topic we have been learning all about trains! We have been looking at trains 'through the ages', we looked at pictures of early trains and even thought about what people used before trains were invented! We sorted pictures of 'old' and 'new' transport and we practised our computing skills by creating pictures of trains using a painting programme. Here is Amaelia's amazing picture - look at the detail of the driver ringing the bell!

In Numeracy we have been learning all about shapes and patterns. We have learnt about the properties of shapes and have been writing facts about shapes in our books! We have made lots of patterns using unifix cubes, peg boards and shapes. Here are some of our patterns...

In RE we looked at the Creation Story. We made a story map to help us remember what happened in the story. Can you retell the story?

Friday 4 October 2013

It's October already!!

Literacy
This week we will be looking at the story 'Knock Knock! Who's There?' by Sally Grindley. We will be using the book to help us think of lots of describing words and how we can use these in our writing. Can you think of any describing words? You could practise by describing your favourite toys at home!

Numeracy
This week we will be looking at shapes and patterns. We will be looking at the properties of 2D shapes and going on a walk around school to see what shapes we can spot! There are some games on education city to help you learn about shapes! What shapes can you see on your way to school?

We will also see if we can find patterns and will have a go at continuing and creating our own patterns too! Here is a great idea for practising patterns at home... have fun!

Numeracy - Numicon

In Numeracy we have been busy adding up! We been exploring the magic of 'numicon' to help us with our adding and developing our understanding of number! We have been laying the tiles over a 'target' number to see what numbers 'go into' that number. Here you can see that 3+1+6=10! It's very clever and very fun to use!

Are we nearly there yet?

As part of our topic we have been thinking about journeys we have been on. We thought about somewhere we had been and how we got there. We used lots of different objects to print with to create these lovely transport pictures and then we wrote about our journey! Can you spot yours?

Guided Reading

We have been working hard in Guided Reading. We each have a Reading Journal where we collect all of our independent learning! We have lots of different activities to do throughout the week. We might be listening to stories, finding books from clues in the book corner, following instructions to colour in a picture, playing literacy games, completing a journal task, reading with Miss Burge or on Reading Eggs. Guided Reading is a very busy part of our day! We love it!

PE - How many different ways can you travel?

In Gym we have been thinking about how we can travel, balance and roll. Here are some pictures of us travelling in different ways. We have been trying to link our movements too!

Next week in Year One...

Topic

In Topic we have started learning about journeys! We have been busy thinking about how we get to school and we have drawn a map of our journey! This week we will be thinking about where places are, what they are like and how we get to them.

Literacy

Today we looked at alliteration and designed our own front cover for a story. We came up with some great story titles...

  • The dolphin who came to dinner.
  • The bear who came to a BBQ.
  • The dinosaur who came to dinner.
  • The snake who came to snack.
  • The panda who came to a picnic.
  • The terradactyl who came to tea.
  • The bear who came to breakfast.

This week in Literacy we are going to continue with our story 'The Tiger who came to tea'. We will be busy story making and changing key features of the book to make our very own story! For more information on how we story make see the 'story making' tab at the top of the blog.

Numeracy

In Numeracy this week we are going to be finding pairs of numbers that make 4 and 5. We call these number bonds.

Number bonds are really important part of our maths learning as they help us with our adding, mental maths and overall understanding of number. It will really help you in numeracy if you know your number bonds 'inside out'.

Here is game so you can practise them at home. There are also some games on education city.

Number Bond Game

Another exciting week on its way!

Literacy

In Literacy we are going to be looking at the story 'The Tiger who came to tea'. This is a lovely story all about a little girl called Sophie who let a Tiger come into her house for tea! If you don't know this story you can watch it here...

This week we will be thinking carefully about the different events in the story and seeing if we can sequence them in order! We will be talking about the beginning, middle and end of the story. You could practise this with your reading books at home! We will also be thinking carefully about the settings in the story and seeing what words we can use to describe them! This week we will get to know this story very well so we can have a go at writing our own story next week!

Numeracy

In Numeracy we will be looking at estimating and counting objects. We will also be looking at ordering numbers as well as practising our number formation! See if you can remember the numbers that are one more or one less from our learning this week here, One more, One less.

Topic
We will be starting a new topic this week! Our new topic 'journeys' will begin with an afternoon for you to explore lots of different things related to journeys to get you thinking of questions you want to find the answers to. What journeys will you go on this weekend? What will you see? What did you pass? How could you draw your journey?

PE

Gym - We will continue to learn new balances and practise our rolls. We learnt 3 rolls last week; the log roll, the egg roll and the teddy bear roll! We even had someone from Year 2 come to show us how to do them and give us something to aspire to! We will think about how we can put all these things together to create a sequence.

Playground Games - We have been developing our throwing, catching and passing skills and this week we will focus on passing to another person. You can practise this at home too, remember to challenge yourself with a smaller ball if you want to!

Thursday 19 September 2013

Harvesting...!

We have had a very busy week learning all about harvesting! We have been describing fruits and vegetables, thinking what we could bring to a harvest festival, sounding out things we could see on a harvest table and sorting foods into how they are harvested! We have also been thinking about our favourite dinners and remembering the meaning of the harvest festival is to give thanks to God for providing us with these foods! Take a look at some of our super work below!

We also learnt how wheat was harvested! We had a go at making our own bread rolls! It was a very messy day in year one today! They looked and smelt delicious!

Our Lovely Class

As part of our all about me topic we painted self portraits! Can you spot yourself?

Wednesday 18 September 2013

From Wheat to Bread

We have been thinking all about how different foods are harvested! On Thursday we are going to be making bread! Watch this video to learn how wheat is harvested to make bread!

From Wheat to Bread (short video)

Or watch Auntie Mabel and Pippin find out how bread is made!

Sunday 15 September 2013

Looking forward to another busy week in Year One...

I hope you have all had a good rest this weekend because we have another busy week planned this week! We are going to be learning all about harvesting and the harvest festival in preparation for our assembly on Friday! We will be exploring harvest across the curriculum, thinking about how we can describe harvest foods, writing lists, creating still life paintings, making bread, as well as learning how different foods are harvested!

In Numeracy we are looking at numbers that are one more or one less than a given number. Singing rhymes such as 10 green bottles is a great way of learning numbers that are one less, and there is also a game on education city for you to play! Remember to press the 'mycity' button on education city to find our games easily!

We will also be learning how to use number lines and how we can use them to help us with our adding!

Saturday 7 September 2013

Some fun games for you to play...

What a fantastic start to Year One

What a fantastic start to Year One!

We have had a very busy few days in Year One! We have been writing, painting, playing, reading, sharing, counting, building, pattern building, computing, drawing and lots, lots more! I hope everyone has had lots to tell mums and dads when they get home, but if anyone needs a reminder our blog will have lots of pictures of what we've been up to!

Literacy
In Literacy next week we will be writing postcards about our holidays. If anyone has any postcards they have been sent over the holidays you might like to bring them in to show us! We will also see how well we can read our high frequency words and tricky words and we will practise putting these words into sentences! These words can be found on our 'word wall' tab on our blog.

Numeracy
In our number work this week we will be looking at 'estimates' and seeing if we can make 'sensible' guesses of how many there are of something. You could practise this at home with your toys or with your dinner! For example...
How many carrots do you think you have on your plate? Now lets count them to see if you were right!
We will also be practising writing our number and seeing if we can put numbers in order. Here is a website to help you practise your number formation... Number formation

Topic
In our topic this week we are continuing our theme of 'All about me'. We will be painting self portraits, thinking about where we live and talking about our families. We will also be making our class charter this week!
