What a Wonderful Week!

Year One have been very hard at work since coming back to school after the half term break!

We have been having lots of fun exploring Alice in Wonderland!

As part of our Literacy unit 'Fantasy Stories' we have been finding all the parts in Alice in Wonderland that tell us this story is set in a fantasy world! There have been lots of things to talk about!

We have been thinking about what happened to Alice, and how she got through the door! We watched the part in the film where Alice falls down the rabbit hole and is presented with the challenge of getting through the door into Wonderland!

In teams we made our own door into Wonderland. We experimented with colour mixing to make these bright and inviting doors, thinking carefully about what details we needed to add.

We also noticed that Alice drank a potion which made her smaller so she could squeeze through the door into Wonderland. We used our imaginations to come up with our own potion recipe! We had some super ideas!

We also had a think about what adventures Alice might get up to when she did manage to get through the door... We had some very imaginative ideas!

Numeracy got very exciting when we received a letter from Alice! It was very sparkly and some unusual flowers fell out of the envelope when we opened it which we decided must have come from Wonderland! In her letter, Alice explained to us that although it was very exciting in Wonderland it was also a little scary! She asked for our help to tell her which we thought the friendliest mini beast in Wonderland might be as she needed to ask one to help her find White Rabbit! We had a discussion and decided the best way to find out would be to ask everyone in the class to see which mini beast most people thought would be the friendliest. We had to design a table to collect our results...

Once we collected our results and had asked our friends their opinion we were able to create a graph of our results...

When we had finished finding out which mini beast was the friendliest we wrote a letter to Alice to tell her about our findings!

On Thursday we watched some of the film without the sound which led to quite a few unimpressed faces! We talked about the impact sound had on the film and on the world around us which got us thinking about sound and music. We had some time to explore different types of music and instruments and then had a think about what we wanted to know more about! Here are some of our questions...

How are musical instruments made?

What is inside your ear and how do you hear sounds?

What are different instruments called?

How do you make a band?

What music do you listen to around the world?

Who writes music and how do you write it?

Why does music make us have different feelings?

Enterprise week...!

We have been very busy during Enterprise Week! We have enjoyed making some brilliant products to sell at the Enterprise market. We have learnt all about fair-trade, and the journey bananas and cocoa beans go on before they get to our shops! We have enjoyed completing market research, designing and advertising our products! Here are some pictures of us making - a big thank you to those who came in to help us!
