What a windy week!

Hello Everyone! I hope you are all enjoying your half term and the weather! What a lot of wind! I hope you are getting lots of rest because it's going to be another exciting and busy term as we lead up to Christmas!

Literacy
Next week we are going to be exploring Poetry! We will  looking at lots of different poems to see if we can spot any rhyming words or any lines that are repeated! Here is a game that you can play to practising spotting rhyming words...Roy The Zebra. Over the holidays you might like to see if you can find some poems. If you find one you can bring it in and share it with the class!

Numeracy
Next week we will be looking at sequencing events and reminding ourselves about the days of the week and the months of the year. You might like to think about what you have been up to this week. You could make a holiday diary to show what you have done on each day, or you could think about all the things you do in just one day and write them down in order!

Topic
After a very successful topic on Journeys we are now going to start our next topic all about Clothes! We will be finding out about different fabrics and their properties, looking at different clothes from around the world and we will also be exploring how clothes are made! We have our very own 'Fairy Tales Fancy Dress' Shop in the classroom which I'm sure you will all be very excited about! Can you spot some things that your favourite character might wear?

Sorting data, letter writing and car making!

Numeracy
During Numeracy this week we have been busy exploring Data Handling. We have made pictograms, tally charts and tables. We had fun asking our friends what their favourite snack is, and recording our results in a tally chart. Then we used the laptops to turn our tally chart into a pictogram!

Literacy
We have had fun in Literacy this week with our story 'Something behind the Curtain'. We have written letters to the 'something' asking it to go away and live somewhere else. We then wrote a letter to the something describing a new place for it to live. Here is one of our letters...

 Topic
We made some super cars this week! We each painted a box thinking about where we would paint the windows and the sunroof! When they were dry we then attached wheels with split pins and stuck stickers on them to add detail for the indicators and the brake lights! We had lots of fun making these cars!

New tabs...

Check out our 2 new tabs at the top of our blog called 'Literacy' and 'Numeracy'. There are some games on there for you to play which links with our learning. Have fun!

Next Week...

Literacy

In Literacy we are looking at an Animated Tale called 'Something behind the curtain'. We will be exploring different emotions, settings, characters as well as making predictions about the story and writing a letter to the 'thing' behind the curtain! You could practise writing a letter at home. You could write to someone in your family or a friend at school!

Numeracy

In Numeracy we will be learning all about data handling! We will be looking at, and using, tables, lists, pictograms and tally charts to gather and display information.

You can practise using a pictogram at home on the link below. Ask a grown up to help you!

Create a pictogram

You can also practise reading pictograms on this link...

Reading Pictograms

Topic

In topic we will be making a sound story about a journey. We will be thinking of all the sounds you might hear on a journey and how we can create those sounds using instruments and our bodies. We will also be following instructions to make our very own car! We will be following our learning from last week where we made predictions about how to make a train move faster, and seeing if we can predict what will happen when we race our cars!

A very creative week!

We had a very creative week in Year One last week! In Literacy we made our own 'creatures' to go behind the door in our story 'Knock, Knock, Who's there'. We used lots of junk modelling and playdough to make our creatures so we could make them very 'descriptive'. Some people made scales by pressing straws into the playdough and some people used straws for spikes! Lots of our models were very sparkly - the classroom looked like Christmas had come early with glitter everywhere! We then described our models putting our describing words in sentences. Here are some of our creatures - can you spot yours?

In Topic we have been learning all about trains! We have been looking at trains 'through the ages', we looked at pictures of early trains and even thought about what people used before trains were invented! We sorted pictures of 'old' and 'new' transport and we practised our computing skills by creating pictures of trains using a painting programme. Here is Amaelia's amazing picture - look at the detail of the driver ringing the bell!

In Numeracy we have been learning all about shapes and patterns. We have learnt about the properties of shapes and have been writing facts about shapes in our books! We have made lots of patterns using unifix cubes, peg boards and shapes. Here are some of our patterns...

In RE we looked at the Creation Story. We made a story map to help us remember what happened in the story. Can you retell the story?

Friday 4 October 2013

It's October already!!

Literacy
This week we will be looking at the story 'Knock Knock! Who's There?' by Sally Grindley. We will be using the book to help us think of lots of describing words and how we can use these in our writing. Can you think of any describing words? You could practise by describing your favourite toys at home!

Numeracy
This week we will be looking at shapes and patterns. We will be looking at the properties of 2D shapes and going on a walk around school to see what shapes we can spot! There are some games on education city to help you learn about shapes! What shapes can you see on your way to school?

We will also see if we can find patterns and will have a go at continuing and creating our own patterns too! Here is a great idea for practising patterns at home... have fun!

Numeracy - Numicon

In Numeracy we have been busy adding up! We been exploring the magic of 'numicon' to help us with our adding and developing our understanding of number! We have been laying the tiles over a 'target' number to see what numbers 'go into' that number. Here you can see that 3+1+6=10! It's very clever and very fun to use!

Are we nearly there yet?

As part of our topic we have been thinking about journeys we have been on. We thought about somewhere we had been and how we got there. We used lots of different objects to print with to create these lovely transport pictures and then we wrote about our journey! Can you spot yours?

Guided Reading

We have been working hard in Guided Reading. We each have a Reading Journal where we collect all of our independent learning! We have lots of different activities to do throughout the week. We might be listening to stories, finding books from clues in the book corner, following instructions to colour in a picture, playing literacy games, completing a journal task, reading with Miss Burge or on Reading Eggs. Guided Reading is a very busy part of our day! We love it!

PE - How many different ways can you travel?

In Gym we have been thinking about how we can travel, balance and roll. Here are some pictures of us travelling in different ways. We have been trying to link our movements too!
