Chilly Builders!

We had a lovely afternoon today during our choosing time! We were exploring some mystery objects, building houses, selling houses in the estate agents, creating images in play dough and learning about houses from the past from our library books. Some of us went outside into our construction site too... it was pretty chilly outside so we kept topping up with some 'warm tea', which looked suspiciously like water! Here are the boys admiring their handy work!

A Lovely Winter Walk...

You can tell by our smiling faces in this picture, and the general buzz around the classroom, that we enjoyed our walk today! We saw lots of things that will help us with our topic! We learnt about different types of houses; detached, semi-detached, terrace, flats and bungalows and tried to spot these along the way!

Thank you to all the grown ups who helped us on our trip :)

Happy New Year!

We had a lovely day back at school today. Everyone came in with lots of exciting stories from the holidays that they enjoyed sharing with us and their friends.

We started the term as we mean to go on today... working hard and being the best that we can be! We began our Literacy topic of Poetry and today we were learning all about our five senses! We will be thinking about how we can use our senses to explore objects around us and how we can incorporate this into our writing.

In Numeracy today we explored the 100 square, looking how it all fits together and reminding ourselves of the value of tens and units. We will spend time this week looking at patterns and how the 100 square fits together.

Our new topic 'Houses and Homes' is set to be an exciting topic, we have lots of exciting things planned! We will find out what we already know tomorrow, and what we want to find out more about in our topic time! Keep checking the blog to find out what we are learning about!

Here is a website we will be looking at to find out what houses used to be like...get ready to take a Step Back in Time!!!

December has arrived!

December has arrived and we are about to have 3 very busy weeks in Year One! On the build up to Christmas we will be learning about instruction writing, doubling numbers and will be continuing our theme of babies and toys, as well as finding time to practise the nativity!!

Literacy
In Literacy we are going to look at some non-fiction texts! We will be thinking about the different features of instruction writing and how we can begin to make our own instructions. We will be ordering events, sequencing instructions and thinking about time words and bossy words!

Numeracy
In Numeracy we are going to be exploring number doubles! In year one we need to be able to remember our number doubles off by heart, just like our number bonds! So we will be doing lots of different activities to find out and learn our number doubles! You could practise these at home with dominoes, a dice, number cards, or even doubling numbers up to 10 (e.g. 10+10=20) that you see on your way to school!

You can practise your doubles here too!

Topic
In topic this week we are going to be practising our computer skills. Year One showed me how brilliant they all have become on the laptops this week when they made a story book with a partner and this week will be thinking about what skills we are using when we are using the laptops. We will be playing some computer simulation games and comparing these to real life situations. We will be evaluating games and thinking about how easy they are to use!
